All of these jewellery designs and many more can be made using the instructions and techniques explained in the book, The Prumihimo Disk – A fresh approach to kumihimo. In these notes I indicate which materials I have used for each design. The width of cord affects the spacing of the beads and the number of beads required, so the quantities may not correspond exactly with the projects in the book. There are 4 main techniques for adding beads to a Prumihimo braid, single beading, double beading, triple beading and quadruple beading. Before attempting any of these designs make sure you have learnt the braid structure and practised it thoroughly. There is plenty of cord in the kit for practise. If your first few braids are a bit twisted you can straighten them by following the instructions on Page 73.
The satin cords are used to give structure to the design and the beads are either threaded onto tiger tail or the grey 0.5mm knotting cord. To make threading easier, stiffen the end of the knotting cord with either clear nail varnish or superglue.
Single Beading – Beads on one side of the braid
Black and crystal bracelet – Follow the instructions on page 25. Use the black 1mm satin cord for the top and bottom cords at number 3 and the bottom cord at number 4. Use tiger tail for the top cord at number 4 to carry the 21 chaton montees.
Teal pearl necklace – Follow the basic set-up on page 21. Use 1m lengths of the 1mm satin cord, but to make a thicker braid the cords have been used double in the top and bottom slots at numbers 1 and 2. Single lengths of 1mm cord are used in the top and bottom slots at number 4. Use 1.25m lengths of the 0.5mm cord to carry the beads in the top and bottom slots at number 3. Thread 28 dark pearls on the top cord at 3 and 28 pale pearls on the bottom cord at 3. Add in a pearl just from the top cord at 3 for 3 sequences. Work 2 sequences without beads. Continue with this pattern. Add the focal beads using the instructions on page 72
Double Beading – Beads on two sides of the braid
Teal and silver bracelet – Follow the instructions on page 39, using the light and dark teal satin cord, instead of ribbon. Thread 45 seed beads onto the top and bottom cords at number 3.
Grey Pearl and black bracelet – Follow the instructions on page 39, using 1mm black satin cord. Use tiger tail for the top and bottom slots at number 3 to carry the pearls. Thread the pearls in an alternating pattern of 18-20 grey and 18-20 white.
Red and Silver bracelet – Follow the instructions on page 39 using red satin cord at numbers 1 and 2 and grey 0.5mm at numbers 3 and 4. Thread on 5 large metal spacer beads with a glass seed bead in between on both the top and bottom cords at number 3. Braid in the beads in one sequence and then leave a complete sequence without beads. Add the rings using the technique on page 72. Braid in a spacer bead on both sides and add more rings in the same way. Add the rest of the beads. Thread three rings onto each end of the braid before adding the end caps and clasp.
Triple Beading – Beads on three sides of the braid
Lilac Pearl bracelet – Follow the instructions on page 51
Red Pearl necklace – Follow the instructions on page 51 using 2.5 times the quantities
Bow Bead bracelet – Use the cord lengths on page 52. Thread 12 4mm silver spacer beads onto the top and bottom cords at number 3 and 7 bow spacer beads onto the top and bottom cords at number 4. In the first 2 sequences only add in a round bead from both the top and bottom beads at number 3. In the next sequence only add in a bow bead from the top cord at number 4. Repeat this sequence to the middle of the bracelet. Add in the focal bead using the technique on page 72. Thread on the rest of the beads and repeat the pattern for the other side of the bracelet.
Quadruple Beading – Beads on 4 sides of the braid
Multi-strand bracelet – Follow the instructions on page 63. In the example the grey 0.5mm cord was used for all 8 cords, but 1mm satin cord could also be used for a more colourful bracelet.
Grey and silver bracelet – Use the basic set-up on page 60. Use 50cm of 2mm satin cord in the top and bottom slots at numbers 1 and 2 and use 60cm of tiger tail to carry the beads in the top and bottom slots at numbers 3 and 4. Thread 30 2mm silver beads onto all 4 tiger tails.
